A prospective marriage visa (subclass 300) is for applicants who want to enter Australia to marry their intended spouse or de facto partner who is an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.

The Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) is a type of Partner Visa Melbourne that lets you enter Australia and stay for up to 9 months in the lead-up to your wedding.

A provisional (fiancé) visa can be granted when:

  • You want to get married in Australia
  • Your fiancé lives in Australia, and they are an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • There is a genuine and continuing relationship between you and your fiancé. You must also show that you intend to marry your fiancé.

How to apply:

1) Both you and your fiancé must complete a 'Prospective Marriage Visa Application Form' (375KB), which includes completing a 'Declaration by engaged to be married or entering into a de facto relationship form' (83KB). The Declaration will help assess if your marriage will be in Australia's national interest. The Declaration must be witnessed by an Australian citizen, permanent resident or an authorised employee at an Australian High Commission, Consulate or Mission Overseas.

2) You must be outside Australia when you lodge your application. If you are in Australia, you must be on a valid visa to lodge this application.

3) Apply online and pay the fee by credit card, debit card or BPAY using either:

  • eVisa* (if applying from outside Australia), we recommend that you apply at least ten working days before the date of travel and allow two business days for processing; or
  • ImmiAccount (if applying from within Australia), we recommend that you apply at least ten working days before the date of travel and allow 15 business days for processing)

4) Arrange English translations of any supporting documents not already in English. The Department will contact you if necessary to have an English translation made by an approved translation service.

5) Arrange police clearances for each country you have lived in after turning 16 years of age (if applicable). The Department will contact you if you must provide these documents. Please note that this process can take up to 12 months.

6) Arrange medical examinations for both you and your fiancé (if applicable). Please see the Department's Medical Examination page for more information on whether a medical exam is required and how to arrange one in Australia or overseas.

7) Prepare visa application forms

8) Have all relevant supporting documentation lodged together with your visa application, including any further supporting documentation not already provided.

9) If your fiancé is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, they must provide their passport and any other evidence of their citizenship or residency to the Department. If your fiancé is an eligible New Zealand citizen, they must provide their passport and a New Zealand birth certificate (if available) to the Department.

10) After you lodge your application, wait for the Department to contact you. We will usually write to you if we need more information within 15 business days.

A Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) lets you:

  • stay in Australia for up to 9 months during your engagement; and/or
