Anxiety, typically considered an unpleasant psychological state is a common negative emotional state associated with nervousness and apprehension. There are two main types of anxiety: trait anxiety which is the personality core, constant worry/behavior regardless of the situation, and state anxiety, which is changeable and varies depending upon the situation. The most common one is state Anxiety which is a temporary mood state and is of two types:

  1. Cognitive state anxiety – it is the psychological expressions such as fear, worries, negative thoughts, frustration, and restlessness.
  2. Somatic State anxiety - it is the physiological change in the body, such as sweat, increased heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and muscle tension.

Athletes are not immune to anxiety, which is why sports psychology has become an essential part of modern-day sports to evaluate players' physical and mental health. Although sports serve as a tool to help athletes with anxiety, sometimes sports may contribute to anxiety. Many factors increase anxiety in athletes, including heavy playing schedules, competition for team places, the pressure of media and fans, pressure of their family, the pressure to win trophies, and the physical demands of high-level sports. These factors significantly affect their mental or emotional health.

Some of the common symptoms to monitor the anxiety level of an athlete are:

  1. Inability to Concentrate: Anxiety affects the athletes' concentration ability. When an athlete worries or has negative thoughts, it causes concentration to drop. The inability to concentrate before and during the competition has a negative impact on the athletes' performance.
  2. Feeling of Fear: Competitive sports create a desire for victory. The desire for victory and better performance often create fear, which indicates severe anxiety. When the athlete is afraid of a particular situation, he may experience body paralysis once present in that situation.

Shaking before a competition is a good example of athletes suffering from stage fright.

  1. Increased Heart rate: Increased heart rate, which is due to excessive release of adrenaline in the body, is often related to panic. If the athletes become increasingly panicked, the brain may not receive as much blood and oxygen as it usually does, which could make the athlete collapse.
  2. Sweating: Another sign of anxiety is sweating, which is caused due to over consciousness of the situation and the apprehensions in the body. The body feels sudden bursts of heat and will release a lot of perspiration when it receives a signal from the brain. Excessive sweating reinforces the anxiety in athletes.
  3. Shortness of Breath: Athletes often experience Shortness of breath which is common for athletes to hyperventilate due to severe anxiety. The Shortness of breath deprives the brain of enough oxygen, which causes dizziness and fainting.

Although Sport-related anxiety is a normal emotion experienced by many athletes and is at times beneficial to sporting performance, if perceived regularly or for a prolonged period of time, it will affect athletes' performance in physiological, cognitive, and behavioral ways. Additionally, it could obstruct injury rehabilitation and the return to sport process and increase subsequent re-injury risk during post-rehabilitation practice and competitions.

Different symptoms such as sudden changes in mood, the emergence of unusual behaviors, or any unexplainable medical changes in athletes could be the signs of increased anxiety in them. Massage Therapy is help to change your mood and anxiety , help in relaxation.
